DAY FIVE - Friday June 17, 2005

Contemplating West End Avenue from the top of the truck

We started out at Spiegelman's Novelties for the store's reprise in the present day. The crisp, clean shop is now decrepit and abandoned with an unsavory woman (Cypress chick and perennial pal, Lisa Russell) yakking on her cell phone. Sarah runs by and stops to look in the window. A sharp glare from Lisa sends her on her way. This moment was captured in an elegant dolly shot with no coverage needed.

Next stop was back in Morningside Park to get the final shot that we had missed the day before. Jeffrey stood on a doorway dolly with the camera, our impromptu Steadicam, following Helen as she ran out of the park. A few takes of this and we were on to 102nd Street for the stoop scene, again featuring the three young thespians.

More flawless performances from the girls and we moved to West End Avenue for the unceremonious dumping of the Homeless Guy's journals in the trash. I guess you have to read the script for any of this to make any sense. Perhaps I'll post it here soon...

Next up was another shot of Helen running. This time she runs across West End Avenue. We really wanted to put the camera in the middle of the street, but good sense prevailed and we lugged it up to the top of the truck, which was double parked on West End. The effect I was going for was the giant buildings receding into the distance and the high angle did the job. With more money and some cops to lend a hand, I would definitely have put the camera in the middle of the street for an even better shot.

The final shot of the week was a missing insert of the spoon from the Subway sequence. I got to be a hand model for Tim Bohn (The Dapper Man). Ah, the glories of the entertainment business. We finished the shoot with ten feet of film left over. Halleluiah.
